My computer is running annoyingly slow, what are the steps I can try myself (before emailing ask@nscsurfers.org) to fix it?

First of all, what tools do you have installed on your computer by way of software? Do you have Cleanup!, CCleaner, MalwareBytes? What anti-virus program are you running?

I usually start by running CleanUp!. Then restart my computer.

Then I runCCleaner, but before I do the cleaning, I check the startup tab to stop unwanted programs from running at start up. Then I do the cleaning. Then restart my computer.

Then I run MalWareBytes to look for any bad guys.

That should help a little. If this does not improve your speed satisfactorily, then send an email to "ask" or see about an appointment to bring your pc in for a "checkup".

In addition to Malware Bytes, I've found a couple more programs specially good in removing 'PUPs' (Potentially Unwanted Programs, the politically correct term for Crapware.) They are AdwCleaner (Adware Cleaner) and JRT (Junkware Removal Tool), both of which can be found at BleepingComputer.com. Neither has to be installed, just download and run.
