2017 person of the year
ED WIRTH
We salute an extraordinary person, Ed Wirth.
Ed has been a member of the club since 2000. He is currently serving as Vice President.
Ed served as Treasurer from 2001 to July 2017. As Treasurer, Ed provided monthly financial reports to the Board and spearheaded the memorial fund for Dick Scott.
A hard-working Board member who has worn many hats, Ed has served for a number of years on the Nominating Committee, the Social Committee, the Grievance Committee and the By-Laws Committee. Every fall Ed is instrumental in helping members by offering computer sessions to help them review their Medicare Part D prescription drug program, saving participants thousands of dollars through his efforts.
Not only is Ed always willing to help anyone he can, he is instrumental in seeing that other club members receive recognition for their services.

February 1, 2017 - Rebecca "Becky" Bennett
“NO” is not a word you think of when you see Becky Bennett. Becky will offer a plan B in form of another solution to the problem or person who can do the job.
Becky has served as Secretary of the club for the past three terms. She takes excellent notes and checks all of us for errors and omissions from the minutes. If you have ever attended a board meeting you would know this is a real feat. |
Other service to the Senior Surfers includes being a past member of the Bylaws Committee, Nominating Committee, and the ad hoc Election Policy Committee. The club page in the Senior Center monthly magazine is Becky’s work. She was also responsible for our table at the most recent Open House for the Senior Center.
You can find Becky in the computer lab on Mondays helping participants as needed. Just ask her for help, and she will kindly sit down with you and work to answer your question or show you how to do something. She also is an assistant in many hands-on classes. If she’s not helping, she’s taking the class.
Becky is an integral part of both the Genealogy Discussion Group and an “expert” during the online research sessions. She also manages the Genealogy at Newark Senior Center blog (http://nscgenealogy.blogspot.com/). To add to her already extensive research skills, she attends education sessions at Family History Center, Delaware Archives and genealogy offerings in Cecil County.

She is a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a prestigious national group founded in 1890. Only female descendants who can provide lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution are eligible for membership. The membership process involves strict research to prove lineage.
"Daughters are vibrant, active women who are passionate about community service, preserving history, educating children, as well as honoring and supporting those who serve our nation." |
Becky, a native of West Virginia, was a math teacher at Elkview Junior High School in West Virginia before moving to Delaware when her husband, Allan, was transferred. She taught in the local Delaware school system for a while before joining the Wilmington Trust Company prior to retirement.
Becky is very creative. She is a member of a quilting group that meets regularly; the group is not part of the Newark Senior Center. Her craft work is beautiful, as you can see in the photo below.

The Senior Surfers are fortunate to have such a knowledgeable, active, loyal and reliable member. Thank you for all you do, Becky!
